below is a photo of their ingredients list. here are some peg’s to be avoided, also see our article on sulphates for dreadlocks safe products, see our products review article leave a comment . ‘dreads’ the dreadlocks documentary posted on april 9, 2015 by dreadlocks wizard posted in uncategorized . there has been a huge buzz circulating recently around the ‘dreads’ documentary . its been pioneered by elijah from dreads uk and has support from what looks like all the notable dreadlocks companies also. all the big names which we all know, love and trust. i contacted elijah who has kindly let us use his videos and embed the campaign here for all of you. ‘dreads’ – the dreadlocks documentary 1 comment . super spiritual dreadheads posted on march 15, 2015 by dreadlocks wizard posted in culture . super spiritual dreadheads – avoid! the problem with spirituality and dreadlocks are the super spiritual dreadheads. they can’t just be happy in their choice, agree or they’ll get very angry! if you get dreadlocks avoid these people! people tend to feel very passionate about their methods one way or another. what we are seeing in the “natural/freeform” branch of dreadlocks is a deep attachment to spirituality often referred to as ‘super spiritual’ a derogatory term given to those who preach militant spirituality. here is whats wrong with dreadlocks and spirituality – super spiritual dreadheads ! on the one hand, spirituality is referred to as a commitment to traditional ideologies. on the other, its very simply a unique and subjective experience of individual growth, non subscript and irrespective of anyone else’s ideas, although parallels in ideology can be seen. the latter accepts everyones perspect as they accept their own. the same cannot be said for the religious subscribers.three main referred to religions with dreadlocks are: rastafarian sadhus of india egyptian pharaohs a clear sign you are talking to a super spiritual dreadhead is when you hear them say ‘it’s not a religion, it’s a way of life’ if you hear that, you know that person is definitely a super spiritual dreadhead! a bit of history to set the record straight! the ancient egyptians (pharaohs) would wear wool wigs as part of their devotion and spiritual identity. in the modern day, we call these ‘synthetic dreadlocks’. whilst people who wear synthetic dreadlocks rarely attribute their hair to the egyptian faith, we can accept an original spiritual connection. bob marley, often used as the main reference for his ‘natural’ stance on dreadlocks, rebuking vanity and allowing the hair to simply grow and evolve. its admirable but what is wrong with many of the ‘bob marley/rasta’ followers with dreadlocks and the methods they preach? = super spiritual dreadheads the problem that often occurs with religion, and is demonstrated throughout the ages, is that their passion often leads to a particularly firm and militant stance. it’s what that individual considers right and wrong based on an existing structure. its this structure that is used to define and steer their development. this is echoed in the way they justify their choices to themselves and others. originally inspired by the sadhus, in 1845, britain brought workers from indian to jamaica. the rastas being a very modern concept at the time saw the dreadlocks and adopted them as their own. the fact they had to been seen suggest a visual representation. it was the ‘look’ that inspired their choice. whilst we agree this look is a rebuke of vanity, its very nature is a contradiction. is their anything wrong with your appearance? i’m not entirely sure what is so wrong about wanting to look a certain way, or why the super spiritualists desire to promote this contradictory idea makes them so angry. rationally, it makes sense to have a healthy relationship with our own human nature, one of which is our own presentation. the very thing that dreadlocks are. a presentation these religious subscribers often allow their strong beliefs to become their identity. rather than just being happy in their beliefs, they feel the need to make everyone else think and feel the same way they do. its their way or nothing at all. this can often lead to anger within themselves when people disagree. where have we seen that before? there are of course not all religious people are the hitler types. there are those that are religious and just happy being them, sadly this is rarely seen as people that are happy, just enjoy being happy and living their lives without the need of justification. as we have read in the definition of spirituality, it is known that spirituality is very subjective regardless of religion as even a religious experience is a personal one. so why do ‘super spiritual’ people, time and time again, imply that if you disagree with them, you are somehow less spiritual? i’ve hard it said that you can tell a ‘godly’ (for want of a better term) person by the fruit of their actions. if the fruit we are seeing is anger, then perhaps we can consider religion to not be of god at all. i’m all for the natural method, the problem is when people get jumped up and super spiritual, inferring that someone else is somehow less spiritual than them for not agreeing with them. if their spiritual pursuit is the fruit of anger, they tend to lack the ability of discernment, to recognise their own lack of control. is this what is considered good in the eyes of their god? whats been your experience? are you one of the super spiritual dreadheads or just happy with your choices? have you experienced a super spiritual dreadheads attack because you don’t agree? what does spirituality mean to you? comment below with your stories and experiences! leave a comment . how to get rid of head lice in dreads posted on february 24, 2015 by dreadlocks wizard posted in uncategorized . // get rid of head lice in dreads today ! // how to get rid of head lice in dreads head lice in dreadlocks is one of the biggest fears, especially if you are a parent! so is it possible to get rid of head lice in dreads? yes, it most certainly is! there are a number of nit treatments out there. the best one we’ve found to get rid of head lice in dreads is called ‘delacet’. its not oily and has worked every time i’ve needed it. this one is also pretty good for those of you who prefer the herbal solution. although, herbal/natural/organic products are all chemicals too, and these terms are simply marketing, some people just choose these. this video is an easy to follow example of just how easy it is to kill head lice. if you follow this exactly to the day, you can guarantee no more lice! this get rid of head lice in dreads video shows clearly… failing that, if you can;t get hold of delacet, here is another sure fire way this is cheap, effective, and does not require you to chop off all your lovely locks! to start, pull your dreads up and try to bun them up if you can, or at least pull it into a high ponytail. use about a half bottle of rubbing alcohol (70% or higher) or however much it takes to cover your scalp. don’t worry about soaking your dreads, because the fumes will kill them (the lice) as much as the alcohol itself. tie a plastic bag or wear a shower cap tightly around your head for about 30 minutes. it’ll itch and its annoying and stinky, but it’ll kill the bugs. rinse it out, and watch the bugs fall out. now, you’ll have to do this again in about 3-5 days because the alcohol only kills the bugs, not their eggs (remember, most of the actual lice shampoos don’t kill the eggs either…) so you’ll have to do this process over again to kill any newly hatched critters, before they have time to reproduce. at this point you really should be lice free, though i would suggest you do it yet again in another 3 days….just to be on the safe side. this is a cheap, easy and very effective way to get rid of lice. it has never once failed us. just make sure you do it in a well ventilated area (we don’t need you passing out on alcohol fumes), and it helps to have a friend or relative to help so you don’t accidentally pour the shit in your eyes. that shit ain’t cool. also, no smoking, as alcohol is highly flammable. (don’t want you head to go up in flames, do you?) and ta-da! lice free, for under 5 pound, and without having you sacrifice your lovely locks! the alcohol rinses out with no residue, and it’ll disinfect any wounds you have on your scalp due to scratching. it will dry out your locks if you have to do it very often, but not anymore so than any of those harsh shampoos would….this is nothing a little aloe wouldn’t cure. one more note…using tea tree oil in your hair acts as a lice/insect repellent. i’ve read that rosemary also acts as a lice repellent, though i’ve never used it myself. the beautiful part about this treatment is that no matter how often you use it, it’s guaranteed to work….lice may develop resistances to poison, but they damn sure can’t resist breathing! and that’s what the alcohol does…it suffocates them. this will also work on undreaded hair, but you’ll have a bit of a hard time with it because the dreadlocks tend to soak up the alcohol much better than straight hair will. if you found this helpful, like, share and bookmark it for your friends! 1 comment . giuliana rancic racist shot at zendaya posted on february 24, 2015 by dreadlocks wizard posted in preparation . giuliana rancic racist shot at zendaya a matter of hours ago, the fashion police host giuliana rancic exclaimed publicly that the disney star and you’ve got swag’s ‘artist with the best style’ winner zendaya colemen ‘smells like patchouli oil… or maybe weed’ simply for brandishing locs. the 18yr old singer, actress, dancer and model from oakland california was outraged. when news traveled and a furry of tweets has broken out this morning on twitter. zendaya says: after this response to giuliana rancic racist, poorly worded, inconsiderate remark, rancic was forced to respond saying whilst this may be over between giuliana rancic and zendaya, its sparked a torrent of cultural appropriation debated over dreadlocks on twitter and is far from over. this has added fuel to the black vs white debate on cultural appropriation as one twitter user writes this kind of debate has been a flare of abuse and outrage by the african american communities. particularly on tumblr. this has caused the debate to now overflow onto twitter. should white people be allowed dreadlocks? should anyone care what someone else does with their hair? if we tell people who can and can’t do anything because of the colour of their skin, is that not racism? hopefully now giuliana rancic will choose her words more carefully! leave a comment . tags: dreadlocks news . vital goods review posted on february 16, 2015 by dreadlocks wizard posted in uncategorized . vital goods review – 8/10 leave a comment . dollylocks review posted on february 16, 2015 by dreadlocks wizard posted in uncategorized . dollylocks review leave a comment . dreads uk shampoo posted on february 16, 2015 by dreadlocks wizard posted in uncategorized . dreads uk shampoo – 10/10 the dreads uk original formula is the best shampoo we’ve found for dreadlocks. not only that, we’ve never seen a bad review. we were very sceptical about this dreads uk shampoo. there was so much hype around it when it came out, we decided to wait a while before buying it. there were only good reviews that were published which made it look a bit unlikely. after a few months, we decided to spend the £12.99 to debunk it. wow, were we surprised! fully giving credit where its due! removes residue build up tightens dreadlocks keeps frizz to a minimum targets and soothes flakey/itchy scalp for use with all types of dreadlocks not dependant on water hardness no animal testing or animal products no sls/sles or parabens fragrance free no palm oil you can get it here * removes residue buildup – what is residue and why does it matter? high street shampoos and many of the (poorly researched) so called dreadlocks shampoos are designed to offer moisture, shine, thickness, heal split ends, the list goes on. this is done by adding additional agents in the shampoo to coat the hair for its respective remedy. dreadlocks do not respond well to these agents and lock in the residues making them difficult to wash out. these residues build up and make dreadlocks take an extended time to dry. residue buildup can be spotted in dreadlocks when you notice a white fuffy/powdery appearance. the result in dreadlocks is a nasty odor and eventually mould. dreads uk original formula removes all these agents clearing 90% of residues with the first wash. with no un-nessisary agents, it maintains perfection for residue free dreadlocks. (for excessive built up see, baking soda + acv wash) *tightening dreadlocks – keeping frizz minimal – how does it work? the popular belief is that adding drying agents like salt, lemon juice and the like should tighten dreadlocks. whilst this is technically true, these agents cause irritation to the scalp and are of minimal tightening benefit. they manipulate the hair to encourage knotting rather than trusting the hair to develop and dread naturally. rather than using additional drying agents, dreads uk original formula is developed to take the hair back to its natural state. removing ‘all’ un-nessisary agents and coatings on the hair, allowing the hairs natural formation to take place. it’s by embracing the hairs natural state we see the dreading process mature and tighten your dreadlocks faster then any agents can. this is the same for frizzy dreadlocks roots. *targets and soothes flakey/itchy scalp when irritations from drying agents and harsh toxic chemicals like sls in other shampoos occurs, many people add to these agents by using opposing agents to compensate. dreads uk original formula doesn’t add to the problem by using an opposing remedy agent, nor provide a healing medicine or treatment. simply by our formulated cleaning, removing all un-necessary additives and agents that caused the irritation, dreads uk shampoo restores your hair to its natural state, resetting your scalp to its default. *why should dreadlocks shampoo be fragrance free? fragrances when added to shampoo, change the molecular structure of the shampoo that then requires additional preservatives. these preservatives are one of the top causes for residue build up in dreadlocks. for this reason, dreadlocks shampoo should ‘not’ have fragrances added. *what are sls/parabens? sls otherwise known as sodium lauryl sulphate is a surfactant. its the main detergent used in most shampoos that have been linked to cancer tumors. it is absorbed by the skin and eventually liver. it has been said to be in the same family as battery acid, which is why we use a sustainable alternative.parabens are preservatives that have been added to prolong the shelf live of many shampoos on the market. these parabens mimic oestrogen and have lead to all kinds of problems with the body. always seek a paraben free alternative. *whats so bad about palm oil? the palm oil industry is a major contributor to animal cruelty, deforestation, climate change, habitat degradation and indigenous rights abuses. the world wildlife fund said “global production of palm oil has doubled over the last decade. by 2000, palm oil was the most produced and traded vegetable oil (fao 2002), accounting for 40% of all vegetable oils traded internationally. by 2006, the percentage had risen to 65%”. some companies claim to have “sustainable palm oil” after its exposure in a struggle to win back favour. all health food store we know of reject any use of palm oil and so do we. the dreads uk shampoo gets a 10/10 from us! http://www.dreadsuk.com/dreads-uk-shampoo.htm leave a comment . palm oil : fact vs fiction posted on february 8, 2015 by dreadlocks wizard posted in uncategorized . sustainable palm oil : fact vs fiction palm oil and the many derivatives come under many names such as, palm kernel, sodium palm kernelate, palmitate, hydrated palm glycerides and the like. but whats the issue? why are so many health food stores refusing to handle it? the palm oil industry is linked to major issues such as deforestation, climate change, habitat degradation, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced. ever since the exposure of the palm oil industry, its left many companies scrambling around, grabbing at anything to save face and justify their use. one such claim is ‘sustainable palm oil’. the fact is, there is no evidence to suggest that this is even a thing. its merely a buffer to get people to continue to buy palm oil products when companies already have huge financial investment. having spoken to a number of health food stores and co-operatives, all of which have refused to handle anything with palm oil or there derivatives whatsoever, for the same reason. sustainable palm oil means nothing. environmentalists organisations dubbed the claim as a ‘greenwashing’ scheme. even companies who claim ‘sustainable palm’, their standards do not ban deforestation or destruction of peatlands for the development of oil palm plantations, which continues. animal impact with over 300’000 animals in jungles of palm origin, many are displaced, injured or even killed through deforestation. government statistics found more than 50,000 orangutans buried alive, killed from machete attacks, guns and other weaponry during the deforestation. other animals suffering as a result of this development include the sumatran tiger, pygmy elephant, sumatran rhinoceros, sun bear, clouded leopard and proboscis monkey. human impact indonesia and malaysia were exposed, using major cases of child labor where they are forced to carry large loads of the fruit. financial profits as a result of taking away land rights of the indigenous people have also highlighted the human rights violations. 1 comment . parabens : fact vs fiction posted on february 8, 2015 by dreadlocks wizard posted in uncategorized . parabens : fact vs fiction ‘ preservatives’ parabens or “para-hydroxybenzoate” are a highly used preservative in many cosmetics to prevent mould, bacteria and yeasts. mainly used for their cheap production costs and preservative strength over the completely opposite extreme inefficacy, poor quality alternatives like grapefruit seed extract. ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, benzylparaben, isobutylparaben and butylparaben are of the most common parabens used. fact – parabens have been a popular choice for years and gone under the radar by both the fda and european union it wasn’t until the 90’s that these preservatives were reclassified as xenoestrogens (agents that mimic estrogen). these agents were recognised to disrupt hormone behaviour, causing numerous issues in the body. in 2004 cancer researcher philippa darbre phd found these parabens in malignant breast cancer tumours. as such, have been restricted by many countries and considered to post serious health risk to both men and women. only recently has the fda and european union acknowledged the dangers. they currently allow the use of parabens while campaigners are requesting more research into them. these preservatives are increasingly being rejected, and have already left the shelves of the more health conscious outlets. on the polar opposite, health conscious developers have sought to use alternatives like grapefruit seed extract which serves well as an antibacterial agent but doesn’t sustain well as a long term preservative. it has a relatively short shelf life. as a result, some of the seed extract manufacturers have added paraben-based preservatived to the citrus extracts which raise much of the controversy surrounding citricidal preservatives. fact – citrus alternatives are not natural citrus seed extracts are not at all “ natural” preservatives. they are chemically derived from the seeds of citrus fruits usingbenzethonium chloride or benzalkonium chloride, both of which are synthetic compounds. t his article sites a number of sources. additionally, citrus seed preservatives are the subject of animal testing. see full report here . even “pure organic” grapefruit seed extract contains roughly 60% of these mystery chemicals. health and environmental conscious?
